Imagine if every computer user needed to be a programmer understanding all the programming languages that power computer logic. In this world computer literacy is unheard of, you either program your own software or you can't use the computer. How far would have that world taken human kind?
Such a world mirrors a world where people cannot comprehend basic numbers that make up their eberyday experience. They can't make informed financial choices, they are blind to graphical data, statistical representation make no sense and have limited sense of measurememt. A trader can count profit after selling but cannot calculate in advance the effect of an interest rate of a loan on such profit or the benefit of compound interest when that profit is invested. A painter cannot translate the volume of paint to the area to be painted even when provided with units data.
The year 2023 will mark 15 years since Mathematical Literacy was introduced into the Further Education and Training band of the South African Curriculum. Foe the fiest time in 2008 every child entering Grade 10 had to learn some Maths for at least 5 hours a week.
